Beyond the warmth and light that sun brings, it is increasingly becoming a source of energy for solutions that sustain everyday life. At Rayudhi Mixed Secondary and Primary School in Migori County, every drop of water once came with effort. 700 pupils were confronted with the harsh reality of unreliable access to water. A rope and container became their means of reaching the water below, requiring them to repeatedly lower, secure and haul it back up-an arduous routine.

Time spent fetching water would have been dedicated to lessons, revision, recreation and rest.

The challenge extended beyond the physical effort. The water drawn from the well was unsafe for drinking, increasing the pupils’ risk of waterborne diseases. As if accustomed to these challenges, the children seemed to endure what had become an unfortunate part of their daily reality. But what if the very rays that warmed the school grounds could also be harnessed to bring water from beneath the ground?

Then, one day, everything changed. Davis & Shirtliff, as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations and under the leadership of Migori Branch Manager Erick Moranga installed a SUNFLO-B2 800C3 solar-powered water pumping system, delivering 4,000 litres of water per hour.

Today, the rays of the sun do more than illuminate the school. Less time and physical effort is spent on fetching water and more time is dedicated for learning.
